Founded in 1832, Wake Forest carries a genuine small-town history that's rare this close to a growing metro — the town was once home to Wake Forest College before it relocated to Winston-Salem in 1956; the original campus is now Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. (A common mix-up worth clearing up: Wake Forest University itself is in Winston-Salem today, not here.)

That history is still visible in the historic downtown along White Street, a walkable stretch of locally-owned shops, restaurants, and galleries — including Shorty's Famous Hot Dogs, family-run since 1916. Joyner Park's 117 acres of trails and green space, along with nearby Falls Lake for boating and fishing, give the area room to breathe. With around 55,000 residents, Wake Forest is North Carolina's 20th-largest city, consistently ranked among the state's safer, more family-friendly communities — and it sits about 30 minutes north of downtown Raleigh, close enough for easy access, far enough to keep its own identity.

Wake Forest's housing spans more eras than most Triangle towns its size. The historic core near North Main Street holds homes dating back over a century, protected as a local historic district. Surrounding that are established mid-century neighborhoods from the 1950s–70s, offering mature lots and character at a different price point than new construction.

On the newer end, several master-planned communities anchor much of today's growth: Holding Village, a walkable, lake-and-park-centered neighborhood near downtown; Heritage, a large established golf-course community; Hasentree, a gated community built around a Tom Fazio golf course; and Del Webb at Traditions, the area's flagship 55+ active adult community. New construction is concentrated along the North White Street corridor, including Grove 98, a mixed-use development anchored by Wegmans.

One detail that sets Wake Forest apart: the town's design standards require new construction to stay architecturally compatible with surrounding character — rooflines, massing, and materials — so newer neighborhoods still feel visually connected to the town rather than looking like a generic subdivision dropped in.

Commute: About 30 minutes to downtown Raleigh, with reasonable access to Research Triangle Park and RDU International Airport.

Medical care: Local primary and urgent care is available in town (WakeMed MyCare 365, FastMed, and Heritage Urgent & Primary Care among them). Full hospital care is a short drive away in Raleigh, including WakeMed Raleigh Campus and Duke Raleigh Hospital.
